Cellular Jail
Cellular Jail is one of the most significant historical landmarks in the Andaman Islands. Located in Sri Vijaya Puram, formerly known as Port Blair, the prison was built by the British between 1896 and 1906 to imprison Indian freedom fighters. It became known as Kala Pani, or Black Waters, because of its isolation across the sea.
The prison originally had seven wings arranged around a central tower, with individual cells designed for solitary confinement. Only part of the original structure survives today, but the remaining complex houses galleries, photographs and exhibits that document the lives and struggles of prisoners.
The evening Light and Sound Show adds another dimension to the visit, narrating the history of the prison and the freedom struggle. For anyone interested in India's history, Cellular Jail is among the most important famous places to visit in Andaman.
Highlights:
- Entry Fee: Approximately ₹30 per adult for the jail. The Light and Sound Show has a separate ticket.
